A gorgeous morning over East Hawaii allowed for a spectacular view of the Leilani flow field. Fissure eight is changing shape, but continuing to pump out a remarkable volume of lava. Most of the fountaining activity is now confined within the nearly 200-foot high cinder cone Pele has built around her fountaining.

Light variable winds over East Hawaii today once again brought horrible vog over most of the flow field this morning… even Hilo suffered the ill effects. The vog and clouds even prevented us from visiting Fissure 8 today.

Fissure 8 continues to be the story of Kilauea’s current eruption… it’s really the only active vent of Kilauea’s Leilani Estates eruption, now in it’s sixth week. The other two dozen fissures are smoking, steaming and glowing, but not erupting… while Fissure 8, almost dead center in the middle of the beleaguered subdivision, continues to send 6-9 million cubic yards of lava a day flowing in gigantic rivers toward the Pacific Ocean.

We were able to access over the flow field this morning in spite of low lying clouds which forced us to ascend up the Pahoa flows from 2014. Special guest, Nastassia Hill, Bruce Omori, Leilani, Lava Ducky and I once again were guided safely through the clouds by Paradise Helicopters’ expert pilot, Ryan Moeller.
